Abstract
The talk will be on the biology of necatoriasis. ‘Sneks long balus’ is Melanesian pidgen for ‘snakes on planes’. Papua New Guinea people call Gastro Intestinal worms “snek bilong bel”, snakes that belong to your belly, which is apt. The snakes on planes angle refers to the travels hookworms from PNG have made since we obtained an isolate many years ago for medical research. This isolate has subsequently travelled from us back to Australia, from there to Leiden, and from us to Washington DC. This travel reflects the burgeoning interest in this research field, which will be described.
